We have received word from Dr. Bill Walsh of Hawaii's Department of Aquatic Resources that the Convict Tangs shown in our CORAL Newsletter of 1/19/2012 are, in fact, seldom collected for the aquarium trade in that state.
Known as manini in the Hawaiian Islands, Acanthurus triostegus is a popular food fish there and generally ignored by aquarium collectors.
"Our records show that very few are taken by aquarium collectors in (39 in FY 2010)," Walsh says. Those seen in the aquarium trade are likely from elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific or the Eastern Pacific.
CORAL regrets any confusion caused by our use of this image.
